In the U.S, its Department of Defense announced their deal with Microsoft which will span 10 years, for the sole aim of providing infrastructure and plaform services for the Pentagon as well as its mission operations. Microsoft was actually in a race with Amazon over who will win the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract and as it is already clear, Microsoft bagged it.
Many other cloud giants had been competing for the contract such as IBM and Oracle, but Microsoft and Amazon came upfront, though it was apparent from the beginning or perhaps from popular belief, that Amazon might win the race afterall.
DOD Chief Information Officer , Dana Deasy had pointed out in an announcement that:
“The National Defense Strategy dictates that we must improve the speed and effectiveness with which we develop and deploy modernized technical capabilities to our women and men in uniform.”
Last year, before Microsoft had gone out to bid for the contract, it was reported that its employees had protested strongly their refusal for Microsoft to get involved in the contract, but as it stands – with the contract in bag for Microsoft, it seems that its employees may stage other series of protests.
